In other words, the event or experience can leave such a long lasting impact that even the next generation of offspring may unconsciously find themselves grappling with “,their parents’ post-traumatic state (2018)”. According to a study conducted by Yehuda & Lehrner, “intergenerational trauma” in its simplified form, means the impact on individuals through extremely traumatic events and/or experiences that can be passed down to their offspring. The term “intergenerational trauma” was actually first derived from children of Holocaust survivors. This concept is known as “intergenerational trauma.” I can partially credit my responses to the way I was raised and how my own family has dealt with traumatic and lived experiences. Upon entering college, I gradually learned to put into words what I was experiencing, how I was responding to those life experiences, and why I responded the way I did. As a result, I found it difficult to recognize and identify with my own mental health struggles. As I mentioned before, I grew up in a background that stayed silent about mental health issues, largely due to cultural stigma and shame.
